The idea
Contrarian and specific. If a reader already agrees with the first line, there is no book in it. We want the argument that gets you disagreed with at dinner, then turns out to be right.
It does not have to be finished. Most of what reaches us is a nugget rather than a scoped book, and that is the stage we prefer to see it.
In special cases we will work with an author on a book that is already published.
The author
Someone who wants to be argued with. We break and build the idea with you. We push on the weak joint, ask where the evidence actually came from, and keep going until the argument holds or it does not.
What gets published is rarely what arrived. If that reads as interference, we are the wrong press. If it reads as the reason to write to us at all, write.
Any subject
We do not keep a list of topics. A subject does not make a book, a claim does. Monetary policy, prayer, semiconductors, grief. We read them all the same way and we apply the same test to each.
What we are not looking for is the trendy argument. A trend borrows its force from the moment and gives it back when the moment passes. We want the argument that is internally powerful, the one that would still hold if nobody were talking about the subject at all.
It should hold the same in five minutes as in five hundred years.
How to start
Send the idea while it is still small. A page or two, one claim, in your own words.
